HIV/AIDS Fellowship: With support from the Open Society, the SSRC has launched a new, pilot fellowship program on HIV/AIDS Health Policy Research that will provide opportunities for African researchers from different institutional and national settings to produce, analyze, disseminate, and utilize knowledge about the public health policy dimensions of HIV/AIDS. In November 2006, eleven fellows from five of the most affected countries in sub-Saharan Africa received fellowships ranging from $10-25K to carry out research on HIV/AIDS related sexual violence and care-giving. Research aims to improve public health policy responses to the pandemic and increase understanding about the interaction between local and global health systems and key factors shaping health governance and health outcomes. Additionally, in December 2006, research fellow participated in a capacity building workshop in Durban, South Africa, on "HIV/AIDS and Public Health Policy Research in Africa."
