This Directory provides brief descriptions and links to the websites of a wide range of organizations, institutions and networks conducting social science research in sub-Saharan Africa. At present, almost 70 organizations can be accessed, organized by the categories listed below. All of the organizations listed in the directory conduct social science research, network researchers and/or provide capacity building for research as a component of their activities, although how central social science is to their work varies widely from one organization to another. Almost all of them are based outside universities, although many work closely with African universities and involve faculty and students from them. Of course, much important social science research in the region is conducted in university departments and institutes. Click here for access to the websites of many African universities: http://africa.msu.edu/AUP/ . Most of these organizations are cross-national—that is, they conduct research, networking and training in more than one country in the region. Lastly, these are African-based organizations, although many network internationally with African studies centers and other social science organizations.
