Students at the 2003 Fellows' Conference |
From 1997 to 2004, the Program in Applied Economics aimed to promote research addressing salient real-world economic and social issues. The core of the Program's work was supporting graduate students working on applied topics as they make the transition from coursework to dissertation research. With financial support provided by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the PAE undertook a variety of grantmaking and fellowship initiatives, including a fellowship in applied economics, a summer workshop series, and a field research grant competition. See the Past Program Activities page for more information on this aspect of the Program's work.
There are, however, a few key areas in which the work begun under the rubric of the Program in Applied Economics is continuing. Research on the Reconfiguration of Asian Economies and Societies has spawned a new research intiative, undertaken jointly with the Development Economics Research Group of the World Bank, on the role of University-Industry Linkages in the development of Asian cities. Additionally, research continues on the Council's HIV/AIDS and Social Transformation Program.
Please note that the Program in Applied Economics is no longer offering fellowships, workshops, or field research grants. For more information on other fellowship opportunities with the SSRC, please visit the Fellowships website.
