East Asia

The heart of the Council's activities in East Asia is the Abe Fellowship Program. For the purpose of this program, the SSRC maintains an office in Tokyo as well as in New York. The Program administers an annual fellowship competition that provides scholars and non-academic research professionals support over a two-year period for research projects addressing any one or a combination of three themes: global issues, problems common to industrial and industrializing societies and issues relating to US-Japan relations.

A new initiative in the East Asia region is a project on Environment and Health in China.

The Council also houses the Northeast Asia Cooperative Security Project.
