London-Brussels Policy Briefings, October 2005
Published on: Dec 01, 2005

On October 13-14 and October 17, 2005, the Program on Global Security and Cooperation held several policy briefings in London and Brussels as part of the dissemination phase of its Project on Political Violence. The purpose of these policy briefings was to reach out to policy communities in Europe and disseminate the research findings and policy recommendations of the joint SSRC-NUPI intensive and systematic study of protracted violent conflicts from around the world. The project seeks to draw lessons from these conflicts and to help shape a common frame of understanding between analysts and policymakers in order to formulate policies that have a greater likelihood of success in resolving protracted conflicts. Following three years of field research, comparative analysis and synthesis of results, the SSRC launched the final stage in the project which focused on policy recommendations and dissemination of findings. To this effect, policy briefings were organized in different locations around the world in the second semester of 2005. At these events, scholars who participated in the project presented the findings of their case studies, a synthesis of the comparative analysis, and policy recommendations outlining new options for dealing successfully with political violence. The events organized in London and Brussels in October included policy briefings at the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Department for International Development on October 13; at the European Commission (External Relations Directorate General) on October 14; at NATO (Policy Planning Unit, Office of the Secretary General) on October 14; and a seminar at Chatham House/Royal Institute of International Affairs in London on October 17.
