Tara Bahrampour was born in 1967 to an Iranian father and an American mother. Her Tehran childhood was a hybrid of Western and Eastern culture-until 1979, when her family fled the Islamic revolution and resettled in the United States. She received a B.A. in English from the University of California at Berkeley in 1990 and an M.S. in Journalism from Columbia University in 1993. She also studied at the Institut des Etudes Politiques in Grenoble, France, did graduate work in sociology at Princeton University, and attended Middlebury College's intensive summer course in Arabic.
