Michael Leland has been the news director at Michigan Radio, the public radio service based at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, since December, 2002. He leads a staff of four full-time reporters and a couple of interns. Michigan Radio covers a large part of the state, from Detroit west to Lake Michigan, so the news staff concentrates on issues and stories interesting to a regional and diverse audience.
Prior to joining Michigan Radio, Michael spent 10 years as a news anchor and reporter for the Voice of America, the U.S. government-funded international radio service. He spent most of that time as VOA's Midwest correspondent, based in Chicago. Michael has also worked as a part-time news anchor at National Public Radio in Washington D.C., as well as a reporter and anchor at stations in Chicago, St. Louis, and Cincinnati.
Michael graduated from Curry College in Milton, MA, with a bachelor's degree in communications and business administration. He has a Master's degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from Kansas State University.
