Heather Lindkvist is a Visiting Instructor in Anthropology at Bates College and a PhD Candidate at the University of Chicago. Since 2001, Ms. Lindkvist has conducted ethnographic fieldwork with the Somali Muslim community in Maine. Her dissertation examines the internal and external conflicts Somali Muslims have faced since voluntarily migrating to Lewiston, Maine from primary resettlement sites around the country. Ms. Lindkvist’s research has been supported by the Searle Fund of the Chicago Community Trust; the Social Science Research Council’s Working Group on Ethnic Customs, Assimilation, and American Law; the Russell Sage Foundation; and Bates College. Currently, Ms. Lindkvist is collaborating with researchers around the country in a multi-site, comparative study of how Muslim immigrant communities adapt Islam to the realities and requirements of life in the United States.
