Economic Development and Equity

No challenge is more important to the future of Latin American societies than the quest for strategies of economic growth to promote an equitable pattern of income distribution. Despite more than a decade of market-oriented reforms, growth remains sluggish across most of the region. Inequality has grown worse virtually everywhere and poverty remains a pressing concern. Addressing these issues was a preoccupation of a number of projects promoted by the Regional Advisory Panel. The Regional Advisory Panel also encouraged programs that examined the linkages between economic performance, on the one hand, and governance mechanisms and cultural contexts on the other.
